Cross Stitcher

OVER TO YOU…

-

We asked our fans on Facebook, “What one tip would you give someone new to cross stitch?”

SARAH ISABELLA GERAGHTY If you buy patterns online use an app called Pattern Keeper, it’s amazing. You can highlight, change the size of the chart, park your threads and so much more.

SARAH ELLE DALLEY Start with a magazine free kit. Pick one where you like the look of some of the other projects in the magazine and the free kit. If you’ve made a card send it to someone who will really appreciate the craftsmanship that’s gone into it.

IRMTRAUD KEMMETER Start with smaller patterns, however much a ‘big’ pattern looks so tempting! Use aida fabric, it’s easier to count, you may stitch on linen as an advanced craftworker!

KATE KNIGHT Make a copy of the chart to work on. That way if it gets dog-eared or ruined you can go back to the original.

LAURA MOORE The threads divide into 6, you usually only need to use 2 of these, it’s basic but it’s a common mistake.

SANDY CAMILLOCCI Purchase the metal place minder sheet with magnets for your pattern while you’re working. Magnets also keep your needle!

CHRIS MATTHEWS Use highlighters and mark o˜ every stitch you complete.

KIRSTY GOWTON Loop starts! Once I discovered them (rather late on into my stitching life) it changed everything. So simple, but really e˜ective.

EMER KENNY Don’t use really long lengths of thread. The optimal length is from thumb to shoulder. Anything longer will tangle terribly.
