Grid And Surface
The structural grid is the protagonist in the design of this modular kitchen by Vincent Van Duysen. Ratio is the Belgian designer’s second kitchen for Dada. The island system is complemented by a building-like wall-mounted shelving unit. The latter establishes a regular rhythm with its slender vertical supports while the former creates a dynamic ‘slippage’ of forms. Volume
(full and empty) and thickness (weighty and slender) interplay within the proportional system. Says Van Duysen, “The kitchen is developed over two layers: the structural layer, consisting of the uprights, and the surface layer. The interplay of vertical and horizontal lines gives the product a strikingly graphic and architectural expression, characterised by the scansion of the vertical uprights and by the doors and rear surfaces.” The materials offer Mediterranean warmth and character through refined woods and natural stones, interspersed by bronze aluminium. Dada is available from P5.
