LEZYNE SUPER GPS £159.99

› The GPS that thinks it’s a secretary

TOP OF LEZYNE’S GPS range, the Super GPS is reasonably priced, reasonably small, and reasonably interesting. The tough plastic case is surrounded by shiny machined aluminium, with the screen slightly recessed. Charging is via a rubber covered micro-USB port, and the lithium-polymer battery should give around 22 hours of use.

The supplied quick start guide is basic, with the full manual requiring a PDF download. Initial setup involved getting to grips with the four rubberised buttons, which without a touchscreen are lumbered with multiple functions, and after several days we still didn’t find them intuitive. Navigating and selecting require either pressing or holding a button – often more than one – but only one function is labelled beside the screen. Another symbol is printed on one of the buttons themselves, which you can’t see when cycling.

The display can show up to four lines of information, with the lowest able to scroll independently to show up to 24 data fields. The unit starts rapidly, and you can select both GPS and Glonass satellites for maximum

An innovatively connected device that needs better controls

accuracy. Most ANT+ or Bluetooth Smart devices can be connected, including many power meters, heart monitors and speed and cadence sensors. Download the free Lezyne Ally phone app and it can also link to Android and iOS devices via Bluetooth, displaying incoming e-mails, texts and phone calls on screen. You can set alerts for distances, heart rate and more; use auto start and stop to control recording; and customise the backlight. But temperature is only displayed in Fahrenheit, it doesn’t show gradient or maps, and to alter settings mid-ride, you need to stop recording and save the ride first. Files are saved as .fit files, which are compatible with Strava and Training Peaks, and can be transferred via USB or the app. It’s claimed to be water-resistant (not waterproof), but we had no problems even in heavy rain. The display itself can be adjusted for brightness and contrast, but figures have a partial shadow and less contrast when not viewed head on. Overall, the tech is good but the casing style and interface seem to be a generation behind.
