We’re not sure what the Velominati says but we like our bike clobber to match. We rate 10 head-to-toe combos from 10 brands

Winter was once a time when only the brave ventured out leaving the rest of us watching the weather forecast or opting for a session on the indoor trainer. With riding kit becoming better than ever, gone are the days of dressing like the Michelin Man or wearing four layers in the hope of staying warm if you do make a break for the road. And with the current trend of bright colours and funky designs, it’s a pleasure to dress and ride in the dark months.

Keeping the rain out and the chill off are the most important variables when it comes to winter pedalling. In recent years jackets have evolved massively and are more like jerseys, becoming lighter, better fitting and more technical. Often all you’ll need is a base layer and a jacket. Similarly, tights are better fitting, warmer and more technical, as are the accessories that help your extremities battle the elements.

Consider the type of riding you’re doing and the pace involved. Not everyone likes to do long slow miles, with some opting to put in fast training sessions now. Let’s not forget those who will be putting in big efforts for the cyclo-cross season. Here breathability becomes a big factor to keep you dry on the inside too.

As cyclists we have diverse needs so no one outfit will suit all. A mix of kit will see you comfortably through three seasons, and a wise investment now will provide happy miles and see plenty of use. Here we test 10 complete winter outfits, including jackets, bib tights, gloves and overshoes, to help make your buying decisions easier.
