FOCUS CAYO AL 105
£899
It’s aluminium and neatly finished with an oversize down-tube, clean lines and internal cable routing, which looks the part, though your mechanic may not approve, and one of the cables rattled over bumps. It’s good to see a front mudguard eyelet, adding to its versatility.
Shimano 105 features again, though you won’t be surprised to hear that costs have been cut with an RS500 chainset - in a pro-compact 52/36 version – and Tektro brakes again. The chainset you won’t notice but the brakes aren’t Shimano’s equals; they’re alright, and do at least have cartridge brake blocks.
A slightly steeper head angle and a fractionally lower weight to the Avant create a sprightly and enjoyable ride. It’s an okay climber, but it’s great as a fast, fitness bike or a sportive machine with good handling, pace and comfort.
Yes, that’s a definite. It’s up there with the likes of Specialized for handling, and pretty decent value. It has tightish tyre clearances for ’guards, but would also make a top, fast commuter bike or all-rounder.
