How old?

San Marco’s Rolls has been termed the most stylish racing saddle ever. Its prevalence on the bikes of professionals and amateurs during the ’80s made it a really coveted seat.

Construction

The Rolls is all curves, and looks traditional with its plastic shell covered in deep, dense Biofoam padding and smooth black leather. Polished metal diamond plaques on each side of the nose and rivets from edge to edge across the tail are charming and classy touches. The rails are Titanox for some vibration absorption and gram shaving. It weighs 308g, and is 282mm long by 143mm wide, which isn’t uncommon for modern race saddles.

Performance

The Rolls’ flat profile suits riders who like to move around while riding, something made easier by the smooth leather. It’s not slippery, but doesn’t impede position shifts. The Biofoam padding is plusher than the Volare’s, especially at the nose, which makes a difference when tucked in to the drops. The low sides rest against the saddle clamp, smoothing the thighs’ passage.

A little flex from the shell and the saddle’s generous padding make the Rolls a relatively comfortable place to spin away the miles. The saddle’s shape feels very familiar to anyone used to modern seats, and exactly like our 27-year-old original, proving that the Rolls is built to last.
