GETTING THERE
The nearest mainline railway station to the start in South Queensferry is Inverkeithing, a 20-minute bike ride away on the other side of the Forth. Alternatively, take a local train from Edinburgh to Dalmeny. There are regular direct trains from the finish in Helensburgh back to Edinburgh.
WHERE TO STAY
The South Queensferry Premier Inn is a 10-minute ride away from the start (all downhill) and Dalmeny rail station. The hotel offers spacious rooms and has a bike-friendly policy – you can keep your bike in your room if you want. It also offers cyclist-friendly breakfasts, ranging from continental buffet to full cooked English (or Scottish if you prefer white pudding and square sausage). Rooms from £36. premierinn.com
FOOD AND DRINK
The Premier Inn has a Brewers Fayre restaurant that serves reliable, carb-loaded pub grub. Alternatively, there’s a McDonald’s or Frankie and Benny’s nearby.
Despite our tense experience at the Village Café in Blanefield, the toasties and coffee were good. Probably best to avoid if you’re in a rush, though. There is no shortage of places for a post-ride blowout in Helensburgh.
