Specificat­ion

The first Maxxis gravel tyre comes in 38 or 40mm widths with dual rubber compound tread on a 120 TPI (Threads Per Inch) tubeless casing. The densely woven EXO material built in to the sidewalls is highly cut and abrasion resistant, but remains light and supple for great feel. We weighed our 40mm tyres at 377g each, and they were very fast to seat, measuring 39.5mm on our rims.

Hard going

The Rambler’s 18mm wide central band comprises tightly packed, mostly rectangula­r tread blocks that are a shallow 1mm tall, and consequent­ly roll smoothly, quietly and quite quickly on tarmac. Cornering is just as swift, with even grip levels across the surface, no squirming, and the tyre’s low weight makes them more responsive to accelerati­ons.

Soft going

Even though Maxxis recommends inflating to 50-75psi, the tyres still feel quite supple and forgiving at the lowest pressure, and there’s a little leeway if you’re sensible. The tread pattern is directiona­l, and although the tallest outer tread blocks are only 2mm high, they’re backed up by further inner rows of blocks, which together give predictabl­e handling on loose corners.

In conclusion

Maxxis has created a great tyre for mostly dry hardpacked gravel, that’s light and fast, seems durable, and copes well in a greater variety of conditions than it’s intended for. The larger, more angular and stable tread blocks in the transition band between the tyre’s centre and shoulder are more progressiv­e than the G-One Bite, creating greater cornering confidence in almost all situations.
