Build up gradually

- Michael Say, 41, NHS category manager

“I wanted to exercise but kept making excuses, like being overly cautious about previous injuries and not being fit enough. Looking back, it was all in my head. Juggling a young family with work commitments meant the time I had to commit to exercise was my commute to work - I knew it was possible to cycle to work via the National Cycle Network’s Cuckoo Trail, but wasn’t sure of my fitness levels. After help from an active steps programme funded by East Sussex Active Access for Growth (AAfG) my good intentions became a reality. I found the first few weeks challenging as my fitness levels were very low and I had to struggle through wind and rain in the winter, but I persevered.

“For those with a busy lifestyle I’d suggest planning your week so that you can work around your schedule and fit your rides in - no matter how busy you are you can find small slots in the day. Before I started cycling I was slipping into an unhealthy way of life and the associated health issues that so many busy people face. I’ve found the stress release and mental clarity that comes from regular exercise makes the daily challenges of life so much easier to overcome. Cycling has changed my life for the better and I currently feel healthier at the age of 41 than I ever did in my 30s.”
