MICHE RACE AXY WP DX DISC
£249.99
Intended use
Miche’s oddly-named budget disc wheelset is built to be light and aerodynamic enough to race, is rigid, responsive, and designed to favour wide profile (WP) tyres.
Build
The asymmetric aluminium rim’s width is 17mm internally, 22mm externally, and is 30mm tall. The wheels are tubeless compatible once converted with a separate kit, and are built with 24 round, plain gauge J-bend spokes on to aluminium hubs with smooth bearings and equally oversized flanges front and back. Supplied with thru-axle end caps for 12mm rear and 15mm front, with 12mm push-in adaptors. A QR axle conversion is available. The rotor fitting is Centerlock. With rim tape our pair weighed 2040g.
Ride
The 28mm Clement Strada LGG tyres inflated to 29mm. We found the Miches to be more lively than their mass suggested. It’s hard to say where the extra weight is, but it didn’t dull performance too much. Initial reaction to a sudden sprint effort is good, and acceleration isn’t shabby, although maintaining it, or sustaining speed on a drag becomes tough quite soon. The tall rims and hub flanges make for stiff, taut wheels, which handle well and look great.
Verdict
The Miches belie their surprising heft with performance that’s pleasingly dynamic, plus great solidity and build quality that makes them a decent training, commuting or off-road wheel.
