FROM THE WORKSHOP...

This month we show you how to replace your worn out chain...

-

BREAK THE (OLD) CHAIN

Using a chain splitting tool, push one of the pins out of the lower stretch of chain, or remove the quick link if the chain has one. Carefully remove the chain from the drivetrain.

THREAD THE FRONT

Thread one end of the new chain through the front derailleur and turn the cranks so that the chain sits on the outer ring with a few inches dangling below.

WHEEL DEAL

Thread the chain over the top of the upper jockey wheel, behind the tab in the derailleur cage arm, then over the lower jockey wheel and finally through the lower tab. Gently release the derailleur.

GO BIG

Before fitting the new chain, shift the rear derailleur to the biggest cog on your cassette and the front one to the largest chainring. With no chain fitted, you won’t need to pedal.

AND THE BACK

Now thread the other end of the chain through the seatstay and lay it over the largest cog of your rear cassette. You will then need to pull down on the rear derailleur.

JOIN TOGETHER

Pull the chain’s ends towards each other and measure which link to split by holding them in place. Move the chain to the smallest cog, insert the pin [Shimano] or attach the connector link plates [SRAM]. Snap together.
