THE WEST RIDING CLASSIC IT’S A ‘TRUE’ CLASSIC 1

-

Joe Clarke has ridden the West Riding Classic (WRC) through the Yorkshire Dales every year since its inception. Here’s what you need to know before taking part…

The WRC eschews digital timing systems, high energy gels and the anonymous tech of much of modern cycling. Instead, the 30-, 60- or 70-mile routes to and from Clapham Village offer clocking-in cards, home-cooked food and old-style camaraderie.

RUN FOR THE HILLS 2

I’ve done longer sportives, but the WRC has some of the toughest individual climbs, by a good way. On the extra-long 70-mile route there’s 2200m of vertical ascent – but you do get some ace descents as a reward.

TAKE IN THE SIGHTS 3

It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you are, you’re out riding your bike, in friendly company, on very quiet (almost car-free) country lanes in one of the most picturesque parts of the country.

DRESS FOR EXCESS 4

Despite the WRC being held on the same weekend in April, I’ve ridden it in balmy 20°C and got sunburnt one year, and in sleet and snow the next. Check the weather before you pack.

TASTE OF SUCCESS 5

Make sure to stop at the feed station for some homemade food. Likewise, the Bunk Barn in Clapham is a great place to catch up with fellow riders after the finish. The beer is always good, as are the pies, and you definitely feel you’ve earned them!
