SPRING KIT TEST

We test eight clothing setups to keep you pedalling whatever the weather throws up this spring

With late spring temperatures in midFebruary this year, we had plenty of opportunity to test out eight outfits from the likes of Sportful, Endura, Castelli and Gore.

Spring is the magical gateway to summer riding with warmer temperatures, blue skies and bright sunshine – well, that’s the hope anyway. But spring in the UK can bring all four seasons in one day, which means getting kitted up for riding takes a little more thought.

Many brands now offer spring-specific bib shorts made from cosy fabrics that can be paired with knee warmers for added versatility. Another option is ¾-length bib knickers that offer heat and comfort with over-the-knee coverage.

For your upper half, there’s a range of choices from a short-sleeve jersey with arm warmers on sunnier days through to long-sleeve jerseys with jacket-like features for when the mercury fails to rise."The jersey and arm warmer combo covers a variety of milder conditions and allows you to adjust your choice on the fly."Plus, on cooler days you can always add"a windproof gilet.

Long-sleeve jerseys are ideal for cooler rides and many offer jacket-like features in a lightweight package. Some feature windproof panels and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) treatment to get you through a shower.

Whichever style of jersey you opt for, they will work best with a base layer. These provide insulation, pull sweat away from your skin and help to regulate your temperature. They’re available in a variety"of fabrics, weights and sleeve lengths to cover all conditions.

Socks are an often overlooked piece of spring kit. There are warmer versions for this time of the year and you will appreciate the difference they can make.

Spring cycling is unpredictable and no one kit setup works for every ride. Here we"bring you a variety of options to cover all conditions and budgets.
