A RIDE WITH DAME SARAH STOREY

The Paralympic Games gold medal winner, six-times British national track champion and Women’s Tour of Britain ambassador reveals her favourite ride

HEAD FOR THE HILLS

“I like to ride a lot in the hills close to home, so a frequent and favourite Peak District route takes in Long Hill, the Goyt Valley, Macclesfield Forest, Blaze Hill and Brickworks as well as a selection of great lanes to connect them.”

TAKE A TEST

“The route is up and down, so a good test of climbing and descending, although the roads are obviously open so it’s never possible to fully test yourself because some roads are quite narrow. I can do efforts on all the climbs and the variety of gradients is useful.”

VARIETY ’S THE SPICE…

“This route’s ideal because it can be done easy, hard and everything in-between. That’s great as I can vary effort depending on mood, training period and any areas I want to work on. Plus, the views are spectacular and it’s usually really quiet.”

RIGHT BIKE FOR ME

“My bike is a Boardman Air 9.8 or an SLR 9.8 – they’re both built with Dura-Ace Di2 and Infocrank power meter. The wheels are from Revolver in their Kronostock range, so can be run as tubeless or with standard tyre and tube. I use Schwalbe tyres on all my wheels. The modifications put all the brakes and gear function on the right as I don’t have a left hand to pull the brakes and operate the gears.”

FUELLING SECRET

“I use Secret Training Big Energy powder for rides over three hours and take a selection of their gels, juice bars and a flapjack. I also have a banana and some Jelly Babies. The length of ride determines what I take and I always have extra.” Eisberg Alcohol Free Wine is continuing its support of cycling again this year as proud sponsors of Dame Sarah Storey’s team, Storey Racing
