The cockpit of the bike, namely the bars, stem and seatpost, are essential components for two of the important contact points. The bar and stem are the main area of control, so choosing the right combination is vital. And the simple seatpost holding and keeping your saddle in the right position is essential.

With many different shapes and sizes of handlebar things can get confusing. Width is a good place to start. This is traditionally based on the distance between the acromioclavicular (AC) joints on your shoulders. A narrower bar can offer aerodynamic advantage but can impact shoulder comfort and make the steering feel twitchy. Conversely, a wider bar can offer more control but make the steering feel slower. It also

increases reach, opens the shoulders further and forces you to lean forwards. Handlebar reach, the distance between the tops of the bar and the curve of the hooks, is also worth considering when buying a handlebar. Generally, smaller riders will benefit from shorter reach while taller riders need something longer.

Traditionally, bars had curved hooks but today there are newer anatomical-shaped bars offering a more forgiving ride, especially to the wrists. Shape is personal but, typically, sprinters tend to favour traditional curves while the rest of us generally nerally benefit from newer compact shapes.

Stems connect the bar to the bike and are designed to deliver stiffness combined with rider comfort. They’re available in a range of lengths and rises to suit all sizes and needs. A shorter, higher-rise stem offers a more upright ride, while a longer lower rise stem delivers a more aggressive position.

The seatpost is another vital connector. These come in a variety of materials, diameters, lengths and offsets. Here we bring you 10 different cockpit setups to suit all pockets and needs.
