The Explore Gore-Tex Pullover is a departure from Rapha’s usual rainwear, and the use of GoreTex Active (Gore’s lightest ever three-layer waterproof fabric) in this new range adds kudos.
It’s not cheap, but does cost a comparable amount to Gore’s own offerings. Rapha’s quarter-length, ring-pull Aquaguard front zip secures the high collar against your chin to keep wild weather out, with large microfibre internal panels and a zip garage preventing abrasion.
The voluminous chest pocket below is covered by a Velcro flap and has two mesh pockets against the chest to separate smaller items from the remaining space. It swallows maps, spare clothing and even light snacks with ease, keeping them readily available on the move. It will also work as a stuff sack when packing the jacket into a pocket, or if you need a pillow when roughing it. The storm hood has elasticated sides and a stiff peak, and works well under a helmet, or off the bike, while reflective partial stripes, logos and dots on the drawcord hem aid visibility.
We liked the Explore Pullover’s relaxed fit, light weight and freedom of movement. Its halfelasticated cuffs and tall collar keep you snug when needed, while the taped seams and Gore’s fabric keep persistent rain out. It also breathes very well, never feeling clammy against exposed skin. This winter tights version of Rapha’s Cargo Bib Short shares its storage concept, but with stretchy mesh pockets on the right thigh and lower back, and zipped, waterproof pockets on the left. They’re constructed from warm, fleece-backed fabric that is well cut and very forgiving, remaining in place throughout. A durable water repellant finish helps light rain and spray bead off, and if heavy rain penetrates, its warmth keeps you comfortable.
