Garmin’s range-topping GPS has more data and functions than you’ll ever need. Most are the same as the 830, but it does work faster. It has a 16GB internal memory and you can add a micro-SD card up to 2TB. Garmin claims 20 hours of battery life, up to 40 with the optional Garmin charge pack. We’re getting just shy of 10 hours when using power, gear and HRM sensors.

Setup is identical to the 830, so it’s a case of planning your page’s profiles on the head unit.

Navigation is superb. Routes are plotted according to your bike type using millions of miles of ride data to find the best route.

When riding with friends you can use ‘group track’ and rider

to-rider messaging. This can also be used to reply to a text message or call. You can also add live tracking.

Warning: this is a big unit best suited to those with a more wandering spirit.

You can use the 1030 for any type of riding from the virtual worlds of Zwift to cities, roads, backroads, gravel tracks, byways, towpaths and trails. Connecting to sensors is a breeze, too.

Like pretty much every other GPS it isn’t flawless. On occasion the autoupload post-ride can get confused but, in all, the Edge 1030 is the gold standard of GPS units in terms of its performance, reliability and capabilities.
