Construction

Topeak’s Joe Blow has a bewildering number of variations, and the range now features the DX. Sitting on a large 275mm-wide cast aluminium base with angled, inset and textured rubber panels for excellent sole grip. The teardrop-profile aluminium barrel is 32mm x 42mm in diameter and 60cm tall. The complete unit weighs in at 2.26kg.

Ergonomics

At 75.5cm from the floor, the Joe Blow DX’s backswept handle is easily within reach, and its moulded, ridged finger holds and rubber top ensure effective grip. Its 26.5cm width offers more than enough space for the largest hands and the generous footrests are impossible to miss. The stroke length is 53cm, lifting the handle 126cm from the ground, while its 72mm diameter, top-mounted pressure gauge couldn’t be clearer to read.

Head

With its 138.5cm rubber hose, the DX can easily reach both wheels from one location, or wheels on a workstand. The right-angled alloy SmartHead DX1 head pushes easily onto Schraeder and Presta valves alike, locking with a chunky lever, and it has a large, fast air bleed button. For storage, the hose loops from the gauge to the base and over the handle to hold it in place.

Inflation

A maximum inflation pressure of 200psi is only really for track riders, but in our 80psi 25mm tyre test the Joe Blow DX reached the target in 30 strokes. Its 19mm diameter plunger rises and falls smoothly and with great ease, and feels very sturdy in use.
