Joscelin Lowden

Team leader with Drops, bronze medallist at the Worlds and winner of the South Coast Classic, here’s how Joscelin Lowden rides when she’s not competing…

OFF SEASON

“I try to get out a good few times a week as it’s important for the head as well as the legs. The Kent hills such as Ide Hill and Toys Hill are amazing as a playground for training. Out of the UK, hands down, it’s Calpe – I spend the winter there.”

ROAD TO HELL

“In Calpe there’s a route that goes up Vall de Gallinera and through the hills to a stretch named Hell Road; it’s off the back of Toudons and it’s a real leg-burning session. After that it’s fast and a slight downhill for 50km back to Calpe. It hurts but I’m guaranteed to finish smiling.”

AERO CHANGES

“My Cannondale SystemSix is a dream. Despite not being super-light it’s still fast to climb on. I wasn’t convinced at first but after seeing the data on it and running some tests myself, I would choose to race on this bike on pretty much any terrain.”

HOME & HOSED

“When I get home the first thing I do is give my bike a hose down, then have a recovery shake with a good amount of carbs in. I time my rides so I get back to a meal. I like a tuna salad with eggs and grains or toast and a cup of tea, followed by some fruit and yogurt with peanut butter. If I’ve been on the turbo I tend to get off and go straight into about 30 mins of strength and conditioning.”

GONE VIRAL

“The Covid-19 lockdown started when I was at an altitude camp in Tenerife. Right now I’m training and trying not to let the restrictions of lockdown form excuses. I can still get the volume and intensity in with the help of the turbo – plus the home strength and conditioning workouts are perfectly effective. I’m used to having to make up routines when I’m away training or racing and there’s no access to the gym. We’ve been really lucky so far in that we can still ride outside, and riding solo just means I focus on what I have to do and get it done.”
