We throw on and test out Ale’s sartorially funky gravel gear - the Joshua jersey and Stones bib shorts

£120; £140 Sartorially funky Italian gravel wear

-

Alé’s take on gravel wear stays true to the lightweight performance ethics behind the brand’s race clothing but adds in practical features. The jersey blends a lightweight, highly breathable front panel with a full-length zip. The sleeves are capped with bicep-gripping cuffs and the shoulders feature anti-abrasion inserts for protection if you’re wearing a backpack.

Around the back there are two large shoulder-to-waist panels of breathable mesh and a central spine to hold shape. The tail is dropped more than most jerseys and features three structured pockets onto which a zipped valuables pocket is integrated on the right side, with two light meshed pockets built onto the remaining pockets – ideal for empty gel packs, though stretchy enough for more bulky items.

The fit is generous for an Italian brand, while performance-wise it’s very comfortable and the breathability is excellent, making this jersey perfect for hot days and indoor training too!

The Stones bibs are similarly practical with both thigh panels integrating large mesh pockets. These also add two further highstretch mesh pockets at the base of the spine so you’re never going to be short of places to store your essentials. The material of the bibs is Lycra Power-Zaffiro, which is a good middleweight material with a nicely compressive, supportive feel. It’s also UPF50+ rated. The upper bibs are lightweight mesh and inside you find Alé’s Green 4H chamois – a deep plush pad ideal for bumpy off-road riding and tuned to long days in the saddle. ddle. The feel, on the road or trail, is one of superb comfort fort and great support.
