-

One a day won’t seem enough with these

tasty, versatile all-rounders

AVAILABLE

All year round, but you’ll find more variety at this time of year. The five most popular apples sold in Australia are Granny Smith,

Red Delicious, Pink Lady, Fuji and Royal Gala. Other varieties include Jonathan, Braeburn, Bonza and Golden Delicious. The sweetness of Red Delicious apples makes them well suited to using fresh in salads and desserts.

PICKING

Choose apples that have a firm, smooth skin with no bumps, bruises or blemishes.

EATING

Apples can simply be washed and eaten – nature’s easiest snack!

TO STORE

Keep in the fridge for up to one month. Storing your apples outside of the fridge causes them to deteriorate quicker, meaning they won’t keep as long.

HEALTH BENEFITS

You’ve heard it time and time again! An apple a day keeps the doctor away – and packed with antioxidants and vitamin C, the saying might be true! Eating them with the skin on will give you an extra boost of immunity – as just under the skin is where all the goodness is found.

Apples are also a great source of dietary fibre, which is important for maintaining good bowel health and regulating cholesterol.

Apples have a glycaemic index of 40 (low) and a glycaemic load of 4-6 (low), meaning they are an ideal choice for people with diabetes, as they won’t cause blood glucose spikes. One medium apple (160g) contains around 20g of carbs

(11⁄3 carb exchanges).
