“I’m just trying to help!”

-

EXPERT TIP It’s important to create an environment of open communication. Although we might assume someone wants and needs help to run their life with diabetes, says Ventura, there are some people who “actually want to be left to their own devices, so it’s really important to clarify what help they would like in the first instance”.

Clarke suggests saying something like; “I’m confused about how I can be helpful. Is there something I could be doing? Or I’m happy to take a step back if that’s what you prefer.” This lets them know they can refuse help without hurting you.
