Master one light first
Even when using multiple light set-ups, it’s the main light that usually determines the overall look of the image. So, even though Helen had used a single light successfully, we decided to start by exploring how to control the lighting with just one flash unit.
I asked the model to move away from the background and closer to the flash. This immediately removed the model’s shadow from the background and also made the shadows on her face much softer. Then I positioned a reflector on the opposite side to the main light to bounce light back into the shadows on the face, producing an evenly lit portrait with no blocked-out shadows.
Reflectors are a great way to introduce a subtle secondary light source without worrying about power settings or placement. You may need an assistant to hold it, or you could attach it to a lighting stand or spare tripod if available.
