The problems that Helen had found using studio flash were holding her back from experimenting with different lighting and effects, and she had also lost a little confidence in her photography. These are quite common issues when experimenting with lighting, because it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the options available, and to forget about the basics. Once she had got to grips with thinking about each light individually, and in a simple sequence, she became much more confident in controlling the lights for creative effect.

This confidence also allowed Helen to talk to the model Antonia and give her better directions, and also to relax a little. This transformed the images that Helen was getting, and by the end of the day she was able to get even more adventurous, asking Antonia to flick her head to try to capture some movement in her hair. Helen just needs to practise these basic lighting techniques before moving on to more sophisticated lighting and background setups. Her lighting journey is just beginning!
