RESEARCHER­S from the University of Lincoln have published a new study that reveals the science behind a ‘trick of the light’ that made photograph­s of an art installati­on, Blade, in the centre of Hull appear faked, even though they weren’t.

The team discovered that the visual illusion was caused by the particular way in which light reflected from the 75-metre, 25-tonne wind turbine blade, giving the impression that the blade was cylindrica­l and was being lit from the side rather than above. The end result was that it looked out of place and therefore super-imposed. (See photo above.)
