Create a New Layer

Hold down Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+N to create an empty layer. When the window opens, set Mode to Overlay, then tick Fill With Overlay – Neutral Color (50% Grey) before clicking OK. Go to Filter > Convert For Smart Filters – this will allow you to adjust the Lens Flare filter later if you save the image as a layered TIFF or PSD.
