wood. However, the arrangement and rhythm of the trees he was seeking eluded the vision he had in his mind’s eye, and he ‘couldn’t see the wood for the trees’. Paul admitted to feeling a little out of his comfort zone but was also quick to embrace the freshness this can bring to the creative process. He was on the hunt for interesting shapes and textures in the scene and had a low-key black-and-white image in his mind. Paul finds colour distracting and as much as possible looks at the world through monochrome eyes. In the end, Paul stepped out of the wood to take in a wider view and soon found his mojo.

Using his trusty Fujifilm medium-format and a 23mm f/2.8 lens, Paul made six images which he stitched together in Lightroom on location before printing the result on Smooth Cotton 300 from Fotospeed’s convenient range of panoramic papers.

“It always completes the connection when you get the final print,” says Paul, “but it’s really special when you get the print in the same location at the same time... Everybody should take their printer to the woods.”
