TO make the most of his wideangle lens, John was on the lookout for some foreground attraction. “As soon as I climbed down to this particular waterfall, I checked the direction of the waterflow. A lot of the time you find smaller streams further down from the main waterfall, and this location did not disappoint in this regard. A little further down there was a cluster of rocks which allowed the water to pass in little streams, and I knew this would make for the perfect foreground interest. The rocks had fallen leaves on them, which gave the image a seasonal feel.
“The composition of the scene lent itself to a portrait orientation shot, but the main challenge I had was positioning the tripod on the slippery rocks. I fitted a circular polariser to the front of my lens, but I obviously didn’t rotate it enough, as there’s still a fair amount of glare on the water in the final shot, and I had to work a bit harder on this in post-production.”
