One good tern

-

Q I want to visit the Farne Islands this summer to photograph wildlife, but someone told me you can often get attacked by seabirds. Is this true? Bobby Pendleton A When you land on Inner Farne, you do have to walk through an area where the Arctic terns nest, so they get a bit irritable with passers-by.

However, the trip is carefully managed by the rangers to ensure the birds don’t get too disturbed, and as long as you wear a hat you’re not in any mortal danger! I’ve walked through the Farne Islands terns many times and have survived to tell the tale, although my jackets do still carry the hallmarks of their displeasure, so take an old jacket. Inner Farne is definitely worth a visit – but a wide-brimmed hat is a good idea!
