10 creative ideas, including a supermoon smartphone tutorial

Using any Fujifilm instax camera usually means a whole load of fun and creativity. For this project, we’re delving into the nifty double-exposure feature that’s on the instax mini 90. When you take two images in succession, the second image is superimposed onto the first, which means you’ll have an intriguing blend of two images on one slide.

This technique comes from traditional film photography, of course, and is a feature on many modern DSLRs. On the instax, though, creating double exposures is even easier, thanks to a dedicated button on the back of the camera

(an icon that shows two overlapping squares).

Press this button to activate the mode, then all you have to do is choose your subjects. You take the first exposure by pressing the shutter, then repeat this step with a second subject and wait for the film to eject. In terms of what you shoot, there isn’t really a right or wrong subject, although you might want to have a few simple ideas in mind.

The easiest double exposure you’ll come across is a silhouette that’s filled with a texture or pattern, and that’s what we tried here. After you’ve given the double-exposure mode a go, try combining the camera’s other modes at the same time – these include macro, timer and L/D (allowing you to lighten or darken the exposure to suit).
