Serena Yorke

Over lunch, Serena shared her morning’s work on her phone, using Nikon’s Wireless Mobile Utility app. This enabled Serena’s D750 to transfer images to her phone over Wi-Fi, giving her a handy swipe-through gallery of images that she can review before posting on social media. For the second challenge, we made the short walk to the Mediterranean Biome.

You could make a case for the Eden Project’s designers saving the best until last. This biome is a visual treat throughout, but especially so in the Western Australia garden. It was created in collaboration with Kings Park and Botanic Garden in Perth, Western Australia, and has three sections.

For Serena, though, the kangaroo paw’s green leaf really stood out from the crowd, creating a flame-like effect in contrast to the red of the kangaroo paws.

Selecting her 40mm lens, and using a left-of-centre focus point on the fingers of the leaf, she’s produced another ‘keeper’.

Expert opinion

The colours, shapes and tone in this image are all spot on and so enticing! Serena has made excellent use of the green wavy part of the plant breaking through to contrast against the pinks and reds of the kangaroo paw. The use of this green part also creates a feeling of movement as it sweeps across the middle of the frame. Even though Serena took this shot at f/8 due to it being at such a close proximity you still get the effective blurred effect at the front and back of the frame which works here.
