Shot of the month
Lynsey Cleary, a Cewe Photo Award 2021 UK and Ireland winner, on ‘Wildflower’
Professional family photographer Lynsey was one of the UK and Ireland winners of the Cewe Photo Award 2021. At the official launch event of the 2023 competition in London last month, we caught up with Lynsey to find out more about ‘Wildflower’, one of two images by her that were being displayed.
“It was taken by the side of the M1 motorway. Everyone thinks it was set in India, but it’s not. I saw the daisies and thought it was a really pretty spot, so I asked a friend of mine if we could do a little family shoot there.
“I upgraded to a Canon EOS R6 recently, but this image was taken on an EOS 6D. I started out using Nikon, but
crossed over to Canon because I love the dreamy colours you get. One of my friends was shooting with a Canon and asked me to try it out, and I fell in love.
“I adore family photography. After my third baby was born I needed to get out of the house, so I enrolled on a college course as I love photos and images.
“I set up an anonymous Facebook page and posted some images on it. I started getting asked to do some shoots and it just went from there.
“The Cewe Photo Award was the first competition I entered. I had joined the Guild of Photography and the Cewe awards came up on the Guild’s page, so I thought I’d give it a go as I’d never had much confidence in my work.
“The Guild and the Cewe Photo Award has definitely given me so much more confidence in my abilities, and has pushed me to believe in myself.”
The Cewe Photo Award is open for entries now until 31 May 2023. Each entrant can submit up to 100 photographs for free across 10 categories to meet the ‘Our world is beautiful’ theme. Prizes totalling £213,000 ($267,000/€250,000) can be won. Find out more at:
