10 GEORGE GREATS

SAMPLES THE BEST OF HIS SOLO WORK

-

1. Fastlove Only saucy-yet-smart George Michael could manage to write an ode to casual sex and by the end transform it into a poignant lament for lost love.

2. Jesus To A Child A sweeping, mournful ballad that was secretly a gay valentine to his partner, Anselmo, who had died from AIDS the previous year.

3. Careless Whisper Classic track from the Wham! era that was George’s first solo release and still sounds like one of the greatest pop songs of all time. It is!

4. As This cover of a Stevie Wonder song was a wondrous duet with Mary J Blige. George’s white boy soul has never sounded better.

5. Faith This was George channeling Elvis and his rock’n’roll heroes for a rockin’ classic that even gets the grannies up to dance at weddings.

6. Outside Proving that he did have the ability to laugh at himself – and adversity! – George wrote this tune about his love for cruising, post-arrest.

7. A Different Corner This 1986 hit was years ahead of its time with a haunting minimalist sound melded with a sad twinkly piano. Different, but perfectly so.

8. Freedom 90 George had two hits with songs called Freedom - the first with Wham! and the second about his battle to be himself. Both deserve due attention.

9. Shoot The Dog Politics to a disco beat. George samples Human League’s Love Action for a caustic critique of the Bush/ Blair relationship.

10. Too Funky This way too funky hit featured outlandish Thierry Mugler outfits in the video worn by Tyra Banks and drag queen Lypsinka, among others.
