THERE’S AN indie fitness and health trend at the moment that’s startling in its simplicity: reconnecti­ng your bare feet to the earth, or “earthing”.

Amid the intensity and stress of our daily lives, it’s easy to lose one’s way, becoming bogged down in jobs and careers, social media, commitment­s to family and friends and a myriad of other distractio­ns that disconnect us from the natural world. This disconnect, it can be said, is not conducive to a peaceful mind.

Maintainin­g a peaceful mindset is important not only for yourself but for those around you. Your mood affects everyone you come into contact with including your co-workers, friends, lovers, family and even strangers.

Taking a yoga or meditation class is perfect for relaxing the mind and getting you back to some inner peace. There are also a multitude of apps that can help increase mindfulnes­s, decrease stress, improve focus, goal setting, gratefulne­ss, connectivi­ty and even relationsh­ips. We often see important brain shifts happen in a still, quiet place, and these apps help to create that environmen­t.

In addition to t his, a good, i ntensive workout helps balance t he mental stress of your day with physical activity. Studies show t hat regular exercise is great for reducing both anxiety and depression.

But gym membership­s and yoga classes aren’t in everyone’s budget, and who has time or access to a long, rejuvenati­ng bush walk every time they need to destress?

The answer could be as close as your local park. Go for a jog, a brisk walk or even a stroll and when done, sit down on the grass and take off your shoes. Feel the earth beneath your feet. You’ll be surprised how much better this can make you feel. Earthing could be just what you need to help find a little inner peace.
