The drag DJ duo tell DNA, “If you have money, we have a talent!”

DNA: It’s a great time to be in the drag business, agreed?

Sabrina: Definitely. RuPaul’s Drag Race has brought so much attention to drag culture and it’s been super helpful in showing that drag queens are humans too.

How did you both get your starts?

Kali: Sabrina started in musical theatre playing Angel in RENT and I started in the club scene. Who are your drag personas based on? Sabrina: They’re based on sooooo many things but name-wise Kali Forni-Kate is based on the TV show Californication, and Sabrina Babyslutxo was literally my Instagram handle all throughout high school! [Laughs.]

Who do you look up to in the drag world? Kali: Pabllo Vittar [Brazilian drag queen, singer/songwriter] is a huge inspiration. She has been a pioneer for drag queen musicians being taken seriously in the music industry.

Drag Race UK has just opened up applications for its second season. Interested?

Kali and Sabrina: [Forlornly] We have to wait for Drag Race Australia because we aren’t residents of the UK.

Sabrina: There are so many different types of drag but only a few are represented on RuPaul’s Drag Race. They exclude trans queens, bio kings, bio queens, etc, which would be amazing if they did showcase them.

How are Australian drag queens different? Kali: In Australia, no one gets tipped so we can do a full production show and not worry about grabbing for money – feel free to throw money at us though! [Laughs.] Also, we don’t usually do one to two hour shows uninterrupted, which, after coming back from Europe, I wish we did do because they look like so much fun.

Why get into DJing as drag queens?

Kali: We were already working in clubs as drag queens, so we thought we may as well DJ. By the end of 2020 we’re hoping to fully run a club by ourselves including bartending and being security. [Laughter.]

How would you describe your musical style? Sabrina: We love playing different genres. Each venue has a different vibe and a different sound. We love choosing music that makes

people dance specifically to each venue. It’s more about creating an atmosphere… of people having fun and dancing rather than a DJ being like, “I like this song, so I’ll play this song!”

Any plans to release your own music? Sabrina: None as of yet, but it’s something we definitely want to do down the line. We really want to collaborate with Cardi B. If anyone out there can make that happen, please help. What are some of the best gigs you’ve played? Kali: The most memorable ones are the very first times doing something, so the first time we DJed and the first time we DJed internationally, our first festival and all our first gigs are super special to us.

Being a drag queen as a DJ must make you a sweaty mess.

Kali: This is why we love DJ-ing at pool parties – because we fit in. [Laughs.]

When you’re not being Jawbreakers what do you get up to?

Kali: Sabrina loves to hike and go to the gym and I love scrapbooking. Sabrina is a Libra cusp

Scorpio and I am an Aquarius. Our favourite food is spaghetti carbonara and our favourite colour is paint splatter.

What’s the one thing a drag queen should never leave home without?

Sabrina: A smile. If you’re not having fun in drag, don’t do it. We’re not just DJs, we do everything from weddings, TV appearances and walking in runway shows. If you have money, we have a talent! Keep an eye out on our socials.

Do people ever think you might be a couple? Kali: We tell people we’re twins, so it’d be weird if they also thought we were dating! [Laughs.] Do you often get hit-on in drag by straight guys?

Sabrina: Oh, straight guys are our biggest fans! Just check our DMs!

How difficult is it to have sex in drag?

Kali and Sabrina: Who’s asking? [Laughter.] Who has done some of the best drag work you’ve ever seen?

Kali and Sabrina: @babyslutxo @kali_fornikate @jawbreakersdj. [Laughter.]

Straight guys are our biggest fans! Just check our DMs!” – Sabrina
