MYKKI BLANCO –
American poet, musician and activist Mykki Blanco might just be one of the most important, if not infernally interesting, artists currently questioning all that is currently wrong in the world. Openly HIV+ and identifying as a trans woman, Mykki’s latest effort is, as the title suggests, Mykki in fighting mode: “bad bitch, I’m militant, make no mistake, resilient, this lace front is Brazilian, choppa spray them civilians,” she sings. Make no mistake, this is edgy, experimental queer hip-hop. The Patriachy track is a prime example of her revitalised and uncompromising style, flowing like underground theatrical pop-angst. Mykki has promised there are plenty more new tunes to come, too, in anticipation of a follow-up to 2016’s Mykki album. Less an end than a new beginning.
