ELITE, LOVE VICTOR, NUREYOV.

(Season 4, Netflix)

-

There are some great productions coming out of Spain and streaming around the world on Netfix. Now into its fourth season, file Elite under “guilty pleasures”. It’s set at Las Encinas, an elite high school attended by wealthy, spoiled rich kids. (Although, season 1 kicked off with three working-class boys arriving at the school on scholarships.) Of course, they’re all beautiful and decked out in designer gear.

Protected from the real world by money and privilege, the most earth-shattering problems they face are, “Who will I pay to write my essay?” “How can I hook up with (insert any name)?” “How can I avoid class?” And “Who’s got the best body to show off in the pool and the showers afterwards.”

The school motto might be, Disciplina, Excelencia, Mérito but it’s the pursuit of excellence, discipline and merit in an active nightlife that’s really on the curriculum here.

Like the seasons before it, this one opens with another body, presumed murdered, and the rest of the series unravels the mystery, delving into the student relationships – many of which are gay — to find the answers.

The guys’ school pants are so tight they leave little to the imagination – and they take every available opportunity to remove them. And the scenes set in the gym showers may as well’ve been directed by Bel Ami. It’s clearly aimed at gay viewers as much as a straight audience.

Imagine Dynasty but set in a wealthy school, and maybe even more addictive, but with the volume turned down to elegant. The dialogue is smart and there are many stunning but unobtrusive drone shots adding to the sumptuous visuals.

The young cast do a lot of posturing and are good at finding their best angles. Jaime Lorente, who plays Fernando, is in another excellent Spanish production, Money Heist.

Season 5 has already been announced. (MA15+, 8 episodes)
