Gaming guru at West Words Festival

- By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY

THERE are quite a few jewels in the crown of this year’s Westwords Fest being held in Dubbo in September, and Ric Lagarto is definitely one of them.

From 10am to 5pm, Ric will host an all day workshop called “Narrative Design and Writing for Games.” He should know. Ric is currently a game design teacher at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment, but as a game designer, narrative designer, writer and author, this creative soul has worked for the best in the business.

Now, these names might be lost on mere mortals but if you know anything about the billion dollar industry that is computer gaming you’ll be familiar with names like Krome Studios, where Ric was senior designer and writer on such titles as “Clone Wars: Republic Heroes”.

Australian company Krome Studios creates games for the Xbox, Nintendo Gamecube, Wii, Game Boy Advance, Dreamcast, Playstation, Playstation 2, and PC and currently developing for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii and Playstation Portable. Yep, gamer’s heaven. With another leading game design company, The Creative Assembly, Ric worked on “Medieval 2: Total War” and “Medieval 2: Kingdoms”, and as narrative and game designer, he worked with 2K on titles such as “Bioshock 2”.

So, his credentials are nothing to sneeze at in the gaming world.

Keen gamers and writers can bask in Ric’s presence for a full day of practical exercises to put you into the headspace of writing for games.

Before entering into the designing and writing games Ric worked for 12 years in professional theatre and on community cultural development projects as a director, writer and performance maker.

His passion is to create engaging narratives and experiences with a focus on creativity, innovation and imagination.
