Out and about with the Groovy Booby Bus

- By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY

TWELVE months on since selling up her house and investing in a set of wheels, now affectionately known as the Groovy Booby Bus, breast cancer awareness advocate and Dubbo local, Donna Falconer, has clocked up 10,000 kilometres on the road.

Spreading her message far and wide (right now she’s in the Northern Territory) puts her in touch with hundreds of people, enabling her to share her stories and theirs, focussing on the importance of having conversations about breast cancer.

In March this year, Donna travelled to Twin Waters, Queensland to attend the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) summit where she spoke on her founding Pink Lady Tables, which has since been adopted by BCNA as a national fundraising initiative, now called the Dine Pink.

During that visit the Groovy Booby Bus made the Sunshine News.

The connections Donna’s making vary from private chats in caravan parks with fellow travellers to addressing large audiences.

She was guest speaker at a business luncheon on Bribie Island, she spent three nights in Tooraweenah and was invited to be guest speaker at a happy hour, she has travelled to Forbes to speak at a Rotary meeting then stayed at Parkes. At Lightning Ridge she was asked by the happy hour entertainment Mel and Susie to tell her story to over 70 travellers.

During the Dubbo Photo News race day earlier this year, Groovy Booby made it onto the Sky Channel, has been on display at dozens of functions including the inaugural NBCF Mother’s Day Classic, was featured in the Grand Parade at the Dubbo Show and recently “met” Tail End Charlie the tractor right here in Dubbo.

One September 7, Donna flew the bras at Broken Hill at the Broken Heel Festival where Groovy decided to stay on theme, and for a couple of days at least, was broken down.

Now Donna and Groovy are headed to Alice Springs, spreading the message that one in eight women will be diagnosed by the age of 85 and 150 men per year and that early detection is vital.
