Dr Makhrov studied art history in St Petersburg and gained a PHD in architectural history from St Andrews. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher of Russian art criticism of the 19th centre at the University of Exeter before moving to Switzerland where he now lives.
His presentation at 6pm will take a glimpse into the private life of the Romanovs, Peter the Great and his successors who spared no expense in building and decorating palaces, villas and gardens. The Guinness World Record-holder for Oldest Sumatran orangutan living passed away on June 17. “Puan” had lived at Perth Zoo in Western Australia since December 31, 1968, when she was about 12 years old. She celebrated her 62nd birthday in January this year – or rather her keepers did – Puan herself reportedly spent her big day avoiding the excitement by hiding under a sack! Puan had 11 children and was a great-grandmother, having exceeded the usual orangutan life expectancy of 50 years.
