Dubbo Dirt Bike Club massive boost

- GEOFF MANN MEL POCKNALL

THE local club built on passion and “hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours and donations” has been given a massive funding boost.

Federal member for Parkes Mark Coulton announced that $242,385 will be spent on the track under the Coalition Government’s Building Better Regions (BBRF). Upgrades to the track and surrounds will potentially attract thousands of visitors to Dubbo for state and national titles.

It is money that will be well spent according to DDBC president Bec Eade.

“The most exciting thing is we’ll be extending the number of gates from 30-40 so it sets us up for higher level and elite riders so we can cater for every level of competition,” the “biker’s mum” enthused.

“We’ll also be installing sun protection shelters and extending our spectator hill so our visitors can get a bird’s eye view and there’ll be a new amenities block with toilets and showers and disability access.”

Bec says the club has over 200 members and attracts riders from as afield as Broken Hill, Wilcannia, Bourke, Cobar, Cowra, Bathurst, Orange, Gunnedah and right up the north coast as well as from the larger cities.

“The club is extremely grateful for the assistance Mr Coulton has provided, not only financially but in the personal interest he has shown in our club. He and his staff have been very supportive and enthusiastic all the way through,” Bec added.

The new facilities will have mutual benefit for the Morris Park Sports Car Club when the new facilities are completed.

“We’ve consulted with the Speedway right from the start and there may well be some joint events in the future.”

The first competitions will be on the 26th July and the Mac Daddy Cup will be run around September. This event is the Dirt Bike Club’s major fund-raiser, with over $11,000 donated to charities in honour of Mitch Mackay, a young rider who died from cancer six years ago.
