It’s been well publicised that when Treyarch design director David Vonderhaar revealed his studio was tweaking the fire rate of a beloved Black Ops II submachine gun, he received death threats. Perhaps it’s understandable, then, that Treyarch is taking a different approach to weapon balance this time around. While traditional patches will still be released, and fully documented, in between there will be regular server-side hotfixes whose content will remain secret – all Treyarch will say is if a gun has been buffed or nerfed. Perhaps that will cut down on the outrage, but it’s odd indeed for a developer to tinker behind the scenes with the tools in the players’ hands and yet not actually give specifics on what’s been changed.
