Dara O’Briain’s Go 8 Bit www.bit.ly/dbgo8bit
While Steve McNeil and Sam Pamphilon’s live videogame show was a hit on the Edinburgh circuit, its move to Dave, the UK’s TV home for semi-scripted banter, isn’t quite as successful. While the show’s creators, host Dara O’Briain and, in the Dictionary Corner role, Eurogamer alum Ellie Gibson, all know their onions, the pool of comedians willing to go on a Dave panel show who also know and love games is, it turns out, the centre of a rather small Venn diagram. Susan Calman and Ed Byrne are naturals; others less so. For years, commissioners have claimed TV and videogames don’t mix. This isn’t quite the elegant riposte we were hoping for, but as the show beds in, and producers get a feel for the games and guests that do and don’t work, we’re cautiously optimistic for its future.
