Blowin’ in the wind

- Chris Jannetta

After reading about Benjamin’s creative awakening within Dreams in issue 349’s dispatches, it made me wonder why I haven’t picked up Dreams yet. The honest answer – I’m intimidated! Sure, it sounds fun to experience everyone else’s wonderful, well thought out and remarkably skilful creations but I know I would never touch the creation tool as I’ve never been all that good at these game genres.

LittleBigPlanet is what I think back to. It’s where my intimidation with this kind of genre began. It was a game everyone seemed to love but it frustrated me more and more as time went by. I knew what I wanted to create but I just wasn’t all that great with the tools provided. I’d play some fantastic levels created by others within the game and think, “This is amazing. Why can’t I create levels like this?” I spend hours creating and tweaking just to end with a sinking feeling that what I’ve created just isn’t that good. Sure, it was fun but what’s the point if it isn’t good?

It seems like a very irrational way to look at these types of games, it’s just a bit of fun at the end of the day. I hope I’m not alone in feeling like this and that someday I can push past that feeling and purchase Dreams, especially now it has VR support.

Part of why Dreams bagged a 10 is because it does such a great job of addressing such insecurities. You never have to start from scratch if you don’t want to, and you certainly don’t have to make an entire level. Start with a tutorial or two, and let us know how you go.
