ASYMMETRY

- BY LISA HALLIDAY

Comprised of two stories, the first part of Halliday’s debut novel is a thinly veiled account of her relationship with novelist Philip Roth, told through the eyes of Alice, an aspiring writer embarking on a romance with a much older and more established author (and the power play that ensues). The second part is told from the perspective of Amar, an Iraqi-american being held in immigration at Heathrow. The two stories seem unrelated, but are tied together via a tiny clue – and it has the literary world abuzz. Asymmetry ($27.99, Granta) is out now
