NEXTGEN CUSHIONS
The latest round of cushion compacts is a far cry from the simplified originals
Proving that some things are worth the wait, the new generation of cushion foundations is offering stellar skin coverage and then some. Refinements in design are allowing for better distribution of the product (without it accumulating in the bottom of the compact) and anti-microbial innovation means they last longer than before. Then there’s the protection factor. Sisley’s new cushion comes equipped with mineral sunscreen to the power of SPF 30. La Prairie pairs a respectable SPF 25 with the brand’s famed Caviar Water and a light-to-medium glowy coverage. La Mer’s new SPF 20 cushion is also designed to create radiant coverage – and like La Prairie, has the option of purchasing just a refill, so it’s eco-friendly, too. “The formula is very flexible. It builds up beautifully, while keeping a satin finish,” says makeup artist Elsa Morgan, who likes to use La Mer’s supplied sponge as well as a foundation brush (to better build up coverage) and a fluffier powder brush (to buff it in) for the most flawless finish.
But her best foundation tip requires a little extra shopping. “I love using a few shades to really create dimension in the face in a natural-looking way ” she says. “Blend the lighter shade where you want to highlight, the darker where you would normally contour. That gives supermodel skin without looking heavily made up and overloaded like you can with a lot of powders.”
