in a simple white singlet, sitting in the sunshine on her sister’s balcony in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, New Zealand-born, international model Georgia Fowler could be on one of her fleeting visits back from her home base in New York. Except, this time she’s here for the long haul, in self-isolation along with the rest of Australia and staying busy keeping her two nieces, aged four and nearly three, entertained.
“It’s an extreme change of pace. I started modelling when I was 15, and I started travelling at 16. For the past three years, every four days or so I was on a plane doing a long-haul. I’m not very used to being in one country let alone being stuck inside,” the 27-year-old says via Facetime. “It’s definitely different. But it’s just been so nice to get back to basics.”
Cooking and playing board games and sharing live at-home workouts with her one-million-plus Instagram followers is keeping her busy while work has largely had to come to a halt. “It’s all a change and I wish it was under better circumstances. But I’m trying to take it as it comes and think positive about it.”
Fortunately, one of the in-demand model’s goals this year was to set aside a few more breaks for herself. “And do what makes me happy. See family and friends and be able to have a relationship.” No matter the circumstances, it seems her intentions are coming to fruition, with restaurateur and Tiktok partner Nathan Dalah fast sliding into the role of significant other. “We met at an event in Australia and then hit it off, and were talking while I was travelling for a while, until, now we’re basically living together,” she laughs. “I think you quite quickly realise, spending this amount of time together, whether you’re going to tear each other’s hair out or not. So far, so good!”
Fowler’s current reality seems a world away from her days walking the once-coveted Victoria’s Secret runway, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. “I guess we all grow up and mature and that was amazing to be able to tick off that dream then, but then your aspirations grow and change. I guess now my aspirations have gone from walking a show and being considered a top model in that category to what I can do with that.”
Using her voice to advocate for the environment through her work with Project Zero is just one way she is hoping to leverage her profile. “Growing up by the ocean, I feel a duty and an absolute respect for it and just want to encourage other people to do the simple things that they can, and offset their carbon footprint… Ultimately to be really thoughtful about how we’re treating the world.” Her latest work involves a partnership with Monday Haircare, a brand co-founded by her primary-school friend Jaimee Lupton that’s Sls-free, paraben-free, cruelty-free, and Fowler ensured the packaging was made from recycled plastic, with plans for refillable bottles.
It’s a significant step in building brand Georgia for the former science and psychology student, with further plans in the health, wellness and beauty space – all things she’s learnt to love over a 12-year modelling career. “In a minute I’m going to want to stop travelling every week for work and it would be nice to have a project of my own to settle back on.
“I love New York a lot, but I love being by the ocean and by my family more.”
