what’s new, now and next
WORK BACK
Everything retro is cool again: we’re doing Jane Fonda’s aerobics classes (via Youtube) after they found fresh life on Ty Haney of Outdoor Voices’ Instagram (@ty_haney), embracing fun dance sessions with choreographer Ryan Heffington (@ryan.heffington) and suddenly have the urge to skip rope.
OLD FRIEND
Prepare to get obsessed with all things Elena Ferrante again. A new novel, The Lying Life Of Adults, is on its way, plus Maggie Gyllenhaal is set to direct a movie based on Ferrante’s book The Lost Daughter, starring Olivia Colman and Dakota Johnson.
ALL SMILES
For Loewe’s new Smiley capsule collection, positivity is key. Neon smiley faces adorn everything from jumpers to purses, which means you can’t help but feel good wearing a piece. Winter dressing never looked so bright. Available from June 11
FROM THE TOP
Putting a new spin on corporatechic, Fendi’s AW20-21 runway saw mid-length skirts and voluminous sleeves paired with ladylike top-handle bags. Go monochrome head-to-toe, then add a burst of colour (our pick this season is yellow) with a playful tote and you’re ready to make a statement when you return to the office.
SOCK IT TO ME
Consider socks to be your new wardrobe MVP. Not only do they stand in for shoes in a WFH situation, but they jazz up any old exercise outfit. Trending styles are sporty, ribbed and above the ankle in length.
OFFLINE HACKS
As life goes increasingly online, we’re streamlining how we use our devices. Pocket saves all the articles you’re eyeing off in one place (getpocket.com), while Speechify will read them out loud for you (getspeechify.com). If all else fails, there’s Forest, which rewards you for minimising your screen time (forestapp.cc), and Envelope, a paper sleeve that limits your phone’s capabilities to calls only (specialprojects.studio).
VEST IN SHOW
The Hawaiian “dad” shirt reigned all summer, and now its trans-seasonal counterpart, the sweater vest, is set to do the same in the cool weather. Wear over a button-down shirt and tuck loosely into wide-leg pants.
ZOOM IN
Keep Zoom meetings feeling fresh with a rotation of fun backgrounds. Choose one from the settings menu or upload your own – perhaps the house from Parasite or one of Wes Anderson’s colourful film sets. Your new office fit-out is only limited by your imagination.
ULTRA LILAC
Universally flattering, subtle enough for daytime and bold enough for evening, lilac is the do-it-all shade you need on your lids right now. Dab a bit of gloss on top for extra oomph.
WRIGGLE ON
Take your cue from ELLE cover star Georgia Fowler and start your own worm farm. It’ll minimise waste from your daily two-andfive, while the nutrient-rich fertiliser it produces will help salvage your sad indoor house plant, too.
