SUZUKI GSX-R1000 K6

As standard they are a modern classic sportsbike, but with a bit of fettling Suzuki’s Gixer 1000 K6 makes for a great track weapon, explains Jason Woodridge…

Well Ibought this bike acouple of yearsago when Igot hit by the track day bug, it was fairly standard apart from race fairings which only meant one thing–the upgrades were on their way thick and fast. This started out with avisit to the ECU flashing guru Dave Wood sat DWR in Aylesbury, were he fitted the Translogic quick shifter and brought it up to a healthy 178.2bhp, alongside adding launch control, pit lane limiter, lower fan activation temp, and a full custom fuel map. Even with this Iwanted more, which is where the pricey bits came in! The best upgrade by far I found wasthe carbon wheels by Dymag, changing the handling dramatically in all ways with better tipping-in, bra king, and acceleration ... even though Ihad toget used to the front end pawing its way up at any given chance. Afterthe handling came the brakes, which meant a Brembo total upgrade to helps top her hard on track. The Brembo RCSMC and M4 calipers with HEL lines now meant she was stopping as quickly as shewould go forward, although my OCD kicked in and had to get the Brembo clutch lever to match, which prompted afull Brembo bar a setup. The next trackday gave me few things to get used to and after checking out afew other bikes with lap timers strapped to top yokes I just had to get one, with the OCD kicking in (again) and sending me the way of an HM dash. Then came a purchase of tyres for the next week’s track days so a quick call to good old Bob Collins at FWR tyres and some new boots were sent out ready. Foran11-year-old bike she still is a beast and gives any of the new bikes arun for their money, although maybe not with me on board! Still, the JDM Grafix and paintjob make her look great at any speed.
