Our top 10 fast Ford legends, but what is number one...?
Over the years there have been plenty of truly fantastic fast Fords, that’s never been in doubt. Aside from the odd one or two, nearly all Blue Ovals to wear the RS, ST, or XR badge have been more-than-decent cars, plus a few more that came with one-off monikers like Supersport and Mexico too. But there are a handful of fast Fords that ascend well beyond just being ‘good cars’, there are some that have elevated to full-on legendary status.
But to be a ‘legend’, a car needs to offer more than just technical prowess and crazy performance. Yes, all of the cars in our list have plenty of performance (some, staggeringly so!), but it’s not their bhp or 0-60 times that makes them a legend. No. To be a true fast Ford legend a car needs have something more; it needs a personality. Whether that’s a feel-good David versus Goliath story of the bluecollar worker taking on – and beating – the rich establishment, or the saddening story of ‘what might have been’, the fast Fords in our legends list all evoke emotions and stimulate a personal connection that means they stop being simple metal boxes with engines and start to become something much more special. To non-enthusiasts they may still be ‘just cars’, but to Ford fans in the know, these machines all have an illustrious history with very special stories to tell; they’re not inanimate objects, they’re more like part of the family.
The Blue Oval stable has a decent back-catalogue of contenders for ‘legend’ status (far more than many lesser marques!) and we’ve spent hours deliberating which cars we think deserve the accolade as a fast Ford legend. We came up with a short list of our top 10, and then asked you guys to vote for your favourite to find out what you Ford fans really think.
